1 800 Mattress Going Out of Business at 260 W 35th St and 24 Others Locations
(post by Ardie) It is not a secret that 1-800-Mattress, a staple NYC-brand of 33 years, also known as Dial-a-mattress and mattress.com is bankrupt and has been in merger talks with its rival, Sleepy’s. After all, 1-800-Mattress did file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last Monday. But a challenge from its largest franchise group may put a stop on that strategy. Now, an unconfirmed whisper, but from a person close to the owner of mattress.com, is that they may be worse off than it has been reported, and their stores may be closing as soon as in a few weeks. That’s a lot of retail locations! The company is headquartered in a 72,000-square-foot warehouse in Long Island City, but it has stores all over the place. Here is a short list of top NYC and nearby locations that may soon be for grabs:
260 W 35th Street
369 West 34th Street
1222 2nd Avenue
31-10 48th Ave, Queens
1703 3rd Avenue
136 Montague St., Brooklyn
84-04 Queens Blvd, Queens
… and 17 other locations in New Jersey, Staten Island, upstate NY, and CT.
Will you miss the radio jingle? “One eight hundred M-A-T-T-R-E-S, oooh, yeah!” I doubt you will. But it always hurts to see a locally-grown business go dark. Now Dial-a-mattress will join Herman’s or Nobody Beats The Wiz on the recent goners list of NYC retail brands.
