Another Terrible, Discriminatory Craig’s List Ad of the Month
(post by BT) You can’t make this stuff up. The style, the grammar, the detail, the run-ons, the discriminatory statements! Check out this terrible for rent by owner ad we’ve found the other day on Craig’s List in NYC:
“4 family home 1 bedrm for rent available oct 1st 1150 rent heat hot water included express bus acroos the street 55 bus right in front nice block good building owner lives in home no pets or smokers showing between 6 and 7pm everyday call for address please have references and be able to fill application no green card or temp status need not apply will do credit and background check on prospective tenants”
“Be able to fill application”?
NYC landlords really are special breed!
Look what I’ve spotted earlier today in a window in Sunnyside in Queens. Recognize this fellow? It’s Chucky! Creeeeepy.

It’s not just NY. I’m suprised the fair housing folks don’t just screen capture the Craigslist listings each morning and start addressing landlord/home seller fan mail.
We just wrote a “How To” post about this stuff - bad Craigslist ads - drawing on the ads in our Asheville, NC area. The aim is to educate about how to write a better Craigslist ad.

Few years ago I came across a Craigslist room-mate / housing ad that described in detail about the location and apartment, including the likes and dislikes of the person seeking roommates.
One line in the ad I remember distinctly is “…and please, no sticky cheeses!”
You have no idea the images that entered my mind when I read that.
